# Server configuration

### Base URL

Your xprem server must be publicly reachable so your apps can fetch updates from it. Point a domain name at your deployment: typically a dedicated subdomain such as `ota.acme.org` or `updates.acme.org`, though a root domain works too.

The URL must use HTTPS.

Keep this URL handy: you'll set it as `BASE_URL` in your deployment config.

### JWT Secret

A JWT Secret is used to sign sessions and upload tokens.

To generate it use:

```
openssl rand -base64 32
```

Then keep it, you'll set it as `JWT_SECRET` in your deployment config.

### Dashboard credentials

The first time the server starts, it provisions a default admin user from two environment variables:

* `ADMIN_EMAIL`
* `ADMIN_PASSWORD`: at least 8 characters, including an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a digit and a special character.

These are read once, during the initial migration. Changing them afterwards has no effect: update your password from the dashboard settings instead.<br>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://mercure-technologies.gitbook.io/xprem/installation-guide/server-configuration.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
